There are researchers trying to make new catalysts to convert Carbon Dioxide (a green house gas) into a fuel or non-green house gas. Others are trying to put in waster Carbon Dioxide into polymers or catalysts supported by polymers.

Catalysts are used in the chemical industries to start from one type of molecule and to change it to another molecule; such as natural occuring fossil petroleum. The separation techniques of the oil use catalysts which in turn make gasoline and other molecules.

Catalysts have been used for years to make edible oils into margarine or to prevent the oil from becoming rancid; but in this case the nickel hydrogenation of some edible oils has led to trans fats which are thought to contribute to heart disease.

Catalysts are used to make precious Gem stones and Drugs, etc.

Enzymes are biological catalysts.
