There are many hotels, motels, bed and breakfast businesses in town; including a youth hostel near the wharf, boardwalk and downtown. The Summer months can be popular; so it is good to make your reservations early. For Apartments and houses for rent in Santa Cruz by location the following are available as of May.14.2009. Many of the rentals only have sign advertizements in the window of the rentals. Craftsman Style house for sale located at 10 Camille Lane, Santa Cruz, CA 95065 it is listed on Craigslist. It is located off North Branciforte ave (beyond Goss st.) before the street goes up hill to the Golf Course. It is close to the Downtown, Beach, UCSC, Post Office and Shopping. . The Seabright Beach area does usually have many Summer vacation rentals by the day, week, month which can be less expensive than the hotels and B&Bs. The Airport transportation from the San Jose Airport can be done by using the Train and then a shuttle over to downtown Santa Cruz, or one can take a bus over from the Cal trans station in San Jose too. Of course one can rent a car and drive from the airport from SJC/SFO to Santa Cruz, Monterey, etc. Easily. From SFO take 280 South till Highway 17 (South) enter Highway 17 south to Santa Cruz. If you come SJC, get onto highway 17 southboard to Santa Cruz.(It is close to the highway on ramp with easy to follow directions.) Car rental is actually better for getting around town if you don't have time to use the slower public transport. There is a small plane airport in Watsonville (it has bus service to Santa Cruz too (airport blvd to Freedom Blvd) then North on Freedom blvd to Santa Cruz( the bus stops are labeled with hourly service. One can fly into the Monterey Airport and stay there or rent a car and drive to Santa Cruz as well. It is an easy drive. There are also shuttle buses that can take you to/from San Jose Airport (SJC) (maybe San Francisco Airport SFO too.) Craigslist might have rides which you can share costs with someone who will be driving over the hill (from San Jose or San Francisco to Santa Cruz.) Here are more shuttle services. There are flight schools at the Watsonville airport and shopping, starbucks coffee shops are near by. Watsonville also has houses for sale and probably many for rent. It is less expensive than Santa Cruz; but it is 20 minutes away by car on the highway. If you want to look at a particular house or neighborhood you can use the free map service by google http://maps.google.com Then you can see actual pictures of the houses and streets. The local bus service in the city of Santa Cruz is the http://www.scmtd.com and they have service from downtown Santa Cruz to the Amtrak Station where one can go onto the Airport or use the Bus, etc.
