Scenic walks, mountain bike rides, hunting, fishing, painting, explorations with computer technologies are the focus of this website from  Alaska and California.

Recherche Institute designs, studies innovative catalysts. The long term strategy includes fluid cracking, polymerization activation, hydroprocessing catalysts, Chemoselective Reductions of unsaturated systems, Assymetric Catalysts and Desulfurization Catalysts; Organometallic Catalysis is also an area studied.
The term Organic with respect to Organic Chemistry comes from the fact that the science studied living system molecules from nature or organisms whether fossils (petroleum, coal), etc.
Inorganic refers to non-living system source molecues such as one would find in the study of Minerology, gems, etc.
Fluid Cracking catalysts are used by refiners to produce higher yields of gasoline and reduce waste.
Refinery Catalysts exploration, food industry catalysts (perfumery, edible oils), pharmaceutical industry catalysts, fabric textile and dye catalysts. Catalysis in Solar energy, biomass, microbiology, fuel cells, and biofuels (renewable energy )are other application areas of catalysis.
Natural product chemistry discoveries often result in the need to make a similar molecule found in nature. Custom Catalysts are sometimes needed for new molecules.
Use of new feed stocks with catalysts such as from waste products are being studied such as use of fryer oil to make fuels and other products.
Catalysts are used to make existing plastics and new plastics and other polymers such as those that occur in nature.
New green technologies are explored to make fine chemicals and biologicals.
Petroleum and coal are very interesting naturally occuring "fossil fuels" with many useful and elegant chemical mixtures which differ in locations around the world. Petroleum and coal uses and discovery are thousands of years old.
Coal, and petroleum, combustion wastes (Carbon Dioxide also is what we breathe out) catalysts are being studied change the green house gases to harmless and or useful molecules.
The study of Chemistry Instruction is also researched.

In Northern California along coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean there are a number of fun places to walk and to ride a mountain bike; such as on the Wilder Ranch State Park (Old Cove Landing Trail) which is just north of the Santa Cruz, CA city limits.  There are bobcats many of which I have seen run in front of my path as I rode my mountain bike. There mountain lions too. I have seen one there. The Wilder Ranch State Park does have more Park lands for walking and mountain bike riding inland which connects to the University of California, Santa Cruz Campus which in turn has fire roads (unpaved) to ride on as well as well as paved walking paths between the Colleges. There is an interesting arboretum too which one can walk or ride through. All sorts of wildlife, deer, falcons are often seen on campus as well as beautiful colorful hummingbirds in the Arboretum on the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) campus. (There are ticks, mosquitoes and fleas in Northern California and most of the USA States ("Lower 48") and in Alaska there are moquitos and leaches in some of the lakes.)

In Santa Cruz there is the scenic West Cliff Drive with it's wide bike and pedestrian path laid out on the sandstone cliff tops. Many sea birds can be seen, dolfin, whale, seals and sea lions and sea otters. In the Summer time West Cliff Drive becomes popular with all sorts of people roller blading, walking, cycling, jogging; so going north up to the Wilder Ranch is more fun if you don't like being around many people. Restrooms are located in the Wilder Ranch State Park parking lot, at Natural Bridges State Park (with free Wi-Fi), the small Park off Almar. The next restrooms are by the wharf and Cowell beach (a beginners surf spot.) Surfboard and bicycle rentals are in town. The Boardwalk Amusement park has restrooms as do the State Park beaches (Seabright, Twin Lakes, New Brighton, Sea Cliff, and  Manresa.) Dogs are allowed on leashes on many of the state parks; but not in the Wilder Ranch. Horseback riders also ride in certain areas of the Wilder Ranch State Park; but not along the coastal Old Cove Landing Trail which is about 1.5 miles long (one way.)
It is easy to charter a small plane at the Watsonville airport off highway 1, Watsonville, to fly over the Monterey Bay area including Santa Cruz; to get an idea of the over all landscape and geology.
In Southern California, there is Griffith Park in the LA (Los Angeles Area) which has areas to hike, walk and bird watch as well as to ride one's mountain bike. There are some beautiful views from up on top of the mountains there. LA Griffith Park Offical Site |||

Up in Alaska there are many opportunities to see wildlife and glaciers; vast open spaces. South Eastern Alaska has the State Capital the small city of Juneau which one has to fly in or go in by boat.
There are small towns like Ketchikan and Sitka worth visiting too.

The South Central area of Alaska has ports like Seward where one can take a Ferri out to Kodiak Island or further out the Aleutian Peninsula to see many beautiful sea birds and Bald Eagles, Puffins, Shags, fish (Salmon, Halibut, Crab, flounder), orcas (killer whales), whales, sea otters, etc. Homer is another area to visit if you want to Fish.

If you want to be close to the big city life of Anchorage, Seward is a good place to go out fishing or wildlife watching; but if you want to be out where few people are the South Western Aleutian Peninsula is pretty beautiful. The weather is changeable all the time. There are not a lot of trails to mountain bike ride; but there are dirt roads which are fun on a mountain bike as they go up and down hills through scenic landscapes of volcanoes and steep mountains.
It is easy to charter a small airplane at the Merrill Field in Anchorage if you want to fly over the glaciers. It can be beautiful; or you can fly down to Soldotna or up to Talkeetna, etc.

Hunting, fishing, bird watching, nature watching guides are available.

Some small towns to visit may be the larger fishing town of Kodiak, Sand Point, Cold Bay (as a place to fly into or take a boat from), King Cove and on Unimak island there is False Pass. Unimak Island is a State Refuge for Wildlife which is teeming with brown bears and just about everything every where else; but in more abundance. Pavlof Bay has beautiful areas to observe wild life as well as up in Canoe Bay. Some people like to work in the canneries of Alaska such as in King Cove, Sand Point, Dutch Harbor, etc.
